Whitney Houston Dead

In Celebrity Bio, News, Opinion on February 12, 2012 at 1:21 am
English: American singer Whitney Houston perfo...

They’re startin’ to drop like flies, but as much as we all loved Whitney Houston, I’m sure there will be many who won’t be surprised by the singer’s untimely demise.

Coming from a rich, well-connected family, born with model looks and singing ability, Whitney Houston seemed hell bent on orchestrating her own burn-out, from chasing Bobby Brown down sidewalk streets, abusing every drug she could get her hands on like they were going to disappear from the planet the next day, hooking up with Ray J, walking off concert stages because she couldn’t sing any more, being the ultimate “diva;” this woman had it all, and just didn’t want it.

It’s sad that she had so much and simply didn’t value it, maybe because it was all given to her on a silver platter. And does Bobby Brown feel anything about her death? Can he sober up long enough to acknowledge any kind of role in her downward spiral? Doubt it.

UK Recruiters Have “Racial Bias” Claims Report

In News, Opinion on February 9, 2012 at 1:04 pm
An attempt at a discrimination graphic.

Oh, now, not our darling brothers and sisters across the pond in the United Kingdom! They can’t be racist, too, can they?

Afraid so, at least according to a Jobs Editor, Louisa Peacock, of The Telegraph, who cites a report from a charity called Race for Opportunity. According to the report, minorities are not only racing for opportunity, their tripping over the bodies of those who have tried to come before them and being blocked from crossing the finish line by their lighter-skinned fellow job hunters.

Here’s a link to the article referencing the report, if you are so inclined: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/jobs/9070027/Recruiters-have-racial-bias-claims-report.html

Candidate’s Ad Slammed for Racist Stereotypes

In News, Opinion on February 9, 2012 at 12:54 pm
Asian (Oriental) American girl with dimples.

Image via Wikipedia. Thank you, Michigan Republican Pete Hoekstra, for perpetuating racist Asian stereotypes! Big help!

Oh, yes, my friends, racism is still alive and kicking the soccer ball down the proverbial field. That’s why we never run out of stories. Sad, but true.

This nice little ditty comes to on behalf of US Senate candidate and charming Republican Pete Hoekstra, who decided to run a Super Bowl commercial in which a young Asian woman riding her bicycle down a country road (surrounded by rice patties and speaking broken English, of course) looks into the camera and slams his Michigan opponent.

“Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spend-It-Now. Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spend-It-Now,
says the Asian woman into the camera.

Don Cornelius Kills Himself

Soul Train

Image via Wikipedia. The "Soul Train" stopped in its tracks a long time ago (with no attempts to revive it that I know of), and now the train's captain has gone, too.

Hard to get happy after reading this, regardless of whatever aspersions people may have cast on the poor 75 year-old guy. He’s still the founder and former host of the TV class “Soul Train.”

Nothing like it before or after, (which is pathetic when you consider the number of black millionaires and billionaires and the success of similar shows for predominantly white audiences like “X Factor“), the program broke barriers and introduced the world to such greats as James Brown and Aretha Franklin.

No snappy jokes for this, just a depressing little note.

Romney “Not Concerned About the Very Poor”

In News, Opinion on February 2, 2012 at 5:08 pm
English: Governor Mitt Romney of MA

Image via Wikipedia. Not exactly Mr. Empathy. Open mouth, insert foot.

Now, I know many people out there are not necessarily surprised to read that Mitt Romney doesn’t exactly have an evolved social conscience when it comes to the plight of poor people, but it shows a tremendous gall to openly announce it, doesn’t it?

Whether or not CNN’s Soledad O’Brien took Romney’s statement out of context (and subsequently left it up in the air for me to reference) is up to you, gentle reader, but for an adult man with Romney’s moneyed-power and influence and education to say such a thing (on TV no less), to me, shows a lack of connection to logical reasoning and empathy. That’s just me, though.

South Africans Ticked-Off Over Poster Showing Interracial Couple Embracing

In News, Opinion on January 31, 2012 at 1:47 am

Oh, snap! Not more interracial dating!

And between a white man and a black woman! Awww, man!

Just when we thought the home of apartheid had (somehow) conquered extreme racism and prejudice, and had balanced its system of governing to be more fair and equal, we find this story of South Africans going crazy over a harmless poster of an attractive interracial couple embracing.

What’s the big deal? Well, if you’re racist and live in South Africa and are accustomed to privilege, you ain’t going to take too kindly to such a poster, are you?

Here’s the charming poster:

Personally, (although I am obviously biased) the poster looks pretty smokin’ to me. It should be in every subway and at every bus depot in America. If that were the case, maybe there’d be more interracial dating between white men and black women. But anyway….

Here are some links to stories of (at least some) South Africans going bonkers over this poster:

Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked to Prejudice and Racism

I know what you’re thinking: No kidding, right!

Most people with functioning frontal lobes already know that racism is a byproduct of having preconceived notions and expectations based on incomplete racist extremes. And now, for all the lovely racist conservatives out there, we have an official scientific study for them to now try to debunk: http://news.yahoo.com/low-iq-conservative-beliefs-linked-prejudice-180403506.html

Outgoing Republican Mississippi Governor Pardons Favor Whites: Big Shocker!

In News, Opinion on January 21, 2012 at 4:54 am

According to a nice piece by Reuters reporters Himanshu Ojha, Marcus Stern, and Robbie Ward, outgoing Republican

"At his press conference today, Governor ...

Image via Wikipedia. "I demand more pastries!"

Governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour‘s grants (as opposed to those by other elephant Babar) of sentence commutations or full pardons that went to 200 or so prisoners went more to white prisoners than black. Some event went to convicted murderers.

And we’re supposed to be shocked by this?

First, he’s a Republican; secondly he’s in charge of Mississippi, a state known to not exactly lovingly embrace ethnic diversity; he is on his way out the door; and finally, he’s morbidly obese. Now, yes, being morbidly obese does not automatically in and of itself mandate corruption, lust for power, or prejudicial use of the power of the pardon. It does, however, indicate love of eating. And in this case, the gluttony just makes him look more evil on top of all the other factors.

But seriously, it’s hard to be surprised by this, as much as I’d love to feign shock.

The good thing is that at least Reuters is on the job and pointing out the disparity in pardons so that those reading are aware of it-whatever good that will do.

Michelle Obama’s “Angry Black Woman” Role

In Opinion on January 18, 2012 at 7:54 pm

Michelle Obama, in my opinion, is no more an “angry black woman” than I am Bill Goldberg. I may be a big, bald, Jewish

President Barack Obama and the First Lady Mich...

Image via Wikipedia.

man, but I’m hardly ready to body-slam Hulk Hogan or any other steroid monster. By the same token, Michelle Obama may be the First Lady, but she is no more a militant black woman than Barack Obama is legitimately deeply concerned about all the unemployed and destitute Americans trying to forage a life together while there remains no job creations program of any kind and no discernible plan to do anything to improve our economy (except give more perks to the rich and then wait).

While it may please racists (whether they be “racist lite,” those who don’t know they’re racist or believe they are; or those who know they’re racist and proud of it) to believe that all black women are either militant crusaders (we should be so lucky) or 700 pound welfare recipients with a train of babies following them everywhere they go; the reality is that neither extreme is the case, of course.

Bottom line: Michelle Obama’s “angry black woman” statements, undoubtedly orchestrated by her army of handlers and PR messaging massagers, are carefully constructed comments intended to deflect attention from her unflattering portrayal in recent books-during a precarious re-election campaign. With Obama’s approval ratings dipping, the last thing they want are books depicting the First Lady as taking a more proactive stance on matters than her President husband.

If Michelle Obama is angry about anything, it’s her unflattering portrait in the recent spurt of “tell all” books that are coming out or have already come out.

Here’s a link to an article about her latest string of protestations:

Is Michelle Obama playing the “race card?” Well, it depends how you define that “card,” but she is, again in my estimation, denying something that she clearly is not. A corporate CEO whose husband and family live in in an insular bubble from the rest of the country and are unable (for whatever reasons) to enact any policies to help those most struggling to make it has nothing to be “angry” about. Maybe “proactive” would be a more appropriate adjective.

And maybe Michelle Obama doesn’t want to say her husband appeared to be passive about certain matters he needed to be engaged in and she wished to take a stronger lead role where she saw a deficit.

Just my opinion. And I could be wrong.

Maybe.
